Club FAQ

How do I join the club?

As of the 2009 fall-term membership within the club is free, however in order to be considered a member you must sign the membership list. You can signup for club membership at any showing throughout the year.

Membership with the club is valid for the school year that you signup in.

What does club membership get me?

As a club member you’ll be able to attend our member only events and be able to access exclusive news letters from Right Stuf on our forums which sometimes include special discount codes for their online store. You will also be able to request a listing for yourself under the ‘Member’ section which can include a website, email, and avatar.

Do I have to be a Carleton student in order to attend the showings?

No, anyone can attend our showings and meetings. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a student at the University of Ottawa, someone who resides in Ottawa, or are just passing through the city.

How can I get involved?

The club holds elections each year for open Executive positions. They typically take place at the end of the year in April or the beginning of September if there are positions that were not filled in April. Our elections usually consist of ‘raise your hand’ if you want to fill the position and if we're fortunate enough to have a volunteer then they get the job. If you missed the elections but would still like to run an Anime event let us know and we'll see what we can do. Also, if you’re interested in helping the club Officer positions may be created by the Executives.

Be advised that only Carleton University students may be Executives.

Does A@C watch its Anime subtitled or dubbed in English?

All of Anime@Carleton's shows are subtitled in English with Japanese audio, unless otherwise posted.

Are you going to continue series xxxx?

Maybe, ask the Executives.

Will you show Anime xxxx?

If you would like to request an Anime be shown let us know and we'll take it into consideration when making up the schedules.

Do you need Anime for the showings?

Most likely not, we have a fairly extensive collection and can usually track down any episodes we are missing. But it never hurts to ask; at least we will know what all the options are.

IRC

At the moment we aren't active on IRC but when we are again here are the instructions on how to connect.

Here you can discuss everything anime, and trade (ahem, unlicensed) anime episodes, movies, music videos (AMVs), pictures,... you get the point. ^^ There's even a bot to tell you the next show's schedule.

Getting Started with Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

Here are some -very- basic instructions to get you on IRC, using a popular IRC client program called mIRC (for Windows 95/98/2000/Me/XP/NT). For a further introduction to IRC try, newircusers.com, IRC Introduction, or IC Network Basics.

  1. Go to www.mirc.com and download the newest version of mIRC
  2. After installing, open mIRC and select File > Options from the menu (or use Alt + O)
  3. A "mIRC Options" window should pop up - choose "Connect" from the left-hand menu of options if it is not already selected
  4. On the right-hand side of the Options window, you'll see an "IRC Network" pull down menu - select Aniverse from this menu
  5. For "Full Name" and "E-mail Address" type whatever you want
  6. For "Nickname" type the nickname that you want to use, and for "Alternative" type the second choice of nickname that you want (note that if both nicknames are being used, you may be assigned a guest nick until you choose a unique nickname)
  7. Once you're connected, type the following in your Status window (there's an input line at the bottom, hit Enter to send text): "/join #anime@carleton"
After doing all of the above you should be able to chat in our channel by typing text in the channel window
Warning: you may not be able to share files and use private messaging if your nickname is not registered

Registering a nickname on IRC Networks running NickServ
If the network you are on uses NickServ, you'll be able to register your nickname so that only you can use it. The following instructions should work on any network, including Aniverse where our channel is registered.
  1. Type "/msg Nickserv help" - this should return useful information about using NickServ if the network you are currently connected to supports it (many do, including Aniverse, but not all)
  2. If the last line worked, try "/msg Nickserv info someNickname", where someNickname is a nick that you want to use and register. The status window will tell you if someNickname is registered or not.
  3. Once you have found someNickname that you like and that is not registered, use "/msg Nickserv REGISTER somePassword"
  4. Every time you log onto the network where you registered someNickname, type "/nick someNickname", and then type "/msg Nickserv IDENTIFY somePassword". You must do this every time you log onto the network if you want to use someNickname. Note that someNickname is not registered to you on other IRC networks!
